Poetry

I mentioned in my first post that I would sometimes post short stories or other things that make me feel like I'm using my major. In school, I hated reading and analyzing poetry (still do--ask my brother Brian when I'm helping him with his homework). Ironically, though, poetry is one of the things that I find easiest to write. The following poem has taken me a while to write as it has been a journey only experienced with time. It's nowhere near as beautiful as the pictures of flowers, but it is close to my heart and ready to be shared.

Graduation

She felt trapped.
She felt stuck.
She couldn't understand
how she had run out of luck.

She looked up.
She looked down.
Her smile never hesitated
to quickly turn into a frown.

She breathed out.
She breathed in.
The time for change, she decided,
was about to begin.

Out with the fear.
In with the faith.
Every day she tells herself
she is finding her place.

She's no longer trapped.
She's no longer stuck.
Instead of looking down
she always looks up.

It took her some time,
but she finally sees:
The best way to take a breath
is to just breathe.
