"The Unended Journey"

Warning: This poem is cheesy, but dear to me.

Take me back to the time
 Where we were two souls.
A boy and a girl
stories untold.

Learning to like while
learning to live.
We learned how to move
And how much we could give.

No one ever expected
this boy and this girl
to let go of first impressions
and spin with the world.

Take me back to the time
we sat under the stars.
Lost in life's moments
we revealed who we are.

You didn't scare
And I didn't fade,
That night is a moment
we now own and made.

It wasn't a date,
but it was a Friday night game.
The time I first met your sister,
who already knew my name.

Take me back to the time
you said to look into your eyes.
You asked me a question
that changed both our lives.

Not too long after
we sat side by side.
You were looking for courage
while I was along for the ride.

The moon has never shone
as bright as that night
you said three words
that took all your might.

Take me back to the time
where we didn't know
what it would take
to survive on our own.

We panicked and cried
we dreaded the day
I would leave you behind
Because I couldn't stay.

Shortly thereafter
we strengthened our bond
in a puppy so small
he fit in your palm.

Take me back to the time
I saw you again
After being lost
frustrations came to an end.

Back then we didn't know
how strong we could be
just by carrying one another
in hearts set free.

That summer flew by.
We didn't drift apart.
Where others end
we took pride in our start.

Take me back to the time
we would rather forget.
We were lost and alone
losing love's bet.

Instead of crumbling
we started to build.
Our foundation was strong
expectations set and filled.

Though we surely lost footing
we never lost hope
that this was our path-
we learned how to cope.

Take me back to the time
our family grew again
because I batted my eyes
and a furrier puppy was in.

We drove like maniacs
the second we heard
our baby was hurt-
I couldn't speak a word.

After a time
Things and bones fell into place.
We found our rhythm
And we set the pace.

Take me back to the time
where I was a mess.
Papers and finals due,
But you had reservations not to miss.

A surprise and laughter
both at my expense.
You were different that night
nervous, fidgety, and tense.

I was in the middle of a conversation
when you interrupted me.
Slowly I turned to you
down on one knee.

I could say take me back
to the time I said yes,
But I'm afraid it makes sense
now to speak in present tense.

Every morning I wake
And to my right side
sits a ring box
emptied daily with pride.

Each day with the ring
I go back to these times
where I was always yours
and you were always mine.

Soon there will be a boy
waiting for a girl
all dressed in white
and wearing her grandmother's pearls.

All of these moments
And so many more
will be carried down an aisle,
for richer or poor.

Though now a boy and girl
sit far apart
their story is far from over
as it beats on in their hearts.
